Abby McDonald and I met in the Proverbs 31 Compel Writers program. She was a growing writer and a kind and gentle lady. We became friends through our time there, and I loved her first book, Shift. I relate to her in many ways, and she has a sweet, warm way of writing that makes you feel as though you are talking to a friend.

Her second book, Surrendering Certainty, came out this past May. Her subtitle says, “Hearing God Today by Letting Go of Tomorrow.” This has been a struggle for me for years. Letting go of figuring out tomorrow, or knowing exactly what God wants right now, and needing to know every step before I do something has been a stumbling block for me.

The problem for me has been that legalism and religion focus on knowledge, but God focuses on a relationship with Jesus and our hearts. When we are more focused on gathering information than on listening to God’s voice or allowing His Holy Spirit to guide us in our lives, we can become distracted and miss God’s heart and what He is trying to teach us or accomplish in our lives.

Abby weaves her personal stories and experiences with God’s word through this book, helping us to see where we have been stuck in fear and helping us to move forward in a deeper trust in God and into all He has for us.
