Recently, we began to do construction on our home. We intended to embark on remodeling the in-law apartment downstairs. As we started the construction, one thing led to another, and before we knew it, we found ourselves having to do a full home remodel, inside and out. It is an older home, so some things wear out naturally. There are also things like bugs that destroy the wood and electrical jobs that were not done well. Foundational aspects of the home are old or just not done in a way that holds up the house well. It is an overwhelming task some days.
As always, God speaks and teaches me through the process. I desire to be intent on hearing and intentional about learning.
This process has given me some very dynamic visuals, I would like to share with you.
First, as we pulled walls down in the in-law apartment, what we found behind the walls was scary. Many things could have happened with the house in that condition. Some things we were aware of, but other things, we did not know were there until we pulled down the walls.
I remembered back to a time when my walls were up everywhere. God began to tear those walls down slowly. It was not until the walls came down that I realized what was behind them. I saw faulty wiring all over the place and several dysfunctional foundational places. God had to replace that faulty wiring and renew my mind with His truth. He continues to do that daily.Are there walls in your heart that need to be torn down? Click To Tweet
We need to allow God to tear down those walls, so He might expose what is underneath them.
Soon after, we began to move upstairs and take more walls down. As I shared in my last blog, this has been an emotional process in some ways. I have lived in this home since I was a child. I grew up there, and my children have been raised there as well. Taking down these walls has caused a flood of memories to come back to me. Some hard, others very sweet. My journey to know God begins there. Battles have been fought on my knees and standing in prayer, and it is where I have learned how to be a wife, mom, daughter, friend, and sister in Christ. It is where strongholds have been torn down and freedom known. There have been victories and defeats. This has been where I have had to learn to trust that God truly wants what’s best for me even though it feels like He is punishing me.This has been the place where I have had to learn what it truly means to let go of what I want, for what God wants, to trade my heart's desires for His. Do you need to allow God to align your heart’s desires with His?
I was standing in the house the other day. Walls torn down, electrical stuff pulled out, and the new structure is being built. The visual was powerful for me. This is truly what God does for us. He restores us from the inside out.

God is so faithful! I learned that in this house. I am grateful that He loved us so much that He sent Jesus to die for us, to be resurrected, and to prepare a new place for us when this life is finished. He has died so the old can be gone and the new can come. We don’t have to live in the old anymore. Our old ways are gone. Our old mindsets are gone. The enemy wants us to think otherwise. He wants us to think we have to be stuck there, but that is a lie!
“Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.” 2 Corinthians 5:17
For those of us who have accepted Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, we have this truth. We are new creatures. The old things and the old ways have passe away. The new has come.
For those who have not accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, this is what God wants to give you. He doesn’t want you to be stuck in the old. He doesn’t want you to live in that old, unsafe, and destructive house. He wants to restore you, from the inside out. I pray you would seek to know who God is. He wants you to know Him.
“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.” John 10:10
Satan wants to steal, kill, and destroy us. That old house represents that for me. I still fight daily in prayer. I still have to surrender my will, and I still have to die to my flesh daily, but I am living in the new. We intend to dedicate this new home to the Lord. May there be life abundantly flowing in and through us in that place. May God be glorified in what He is doing, for He truly is doing a new thing!
“Behold, the former things have come to pass,
Now I declare new things;
Before they spring forth, I proclaim them to you.” Isaiah 42:9
