Do you have a friend who only hangs out with you when you are doing what they want to do?
Do you know people who are so absorbed in themselves that they don’t even take time to ask how you are?
Are you friends with anyone because of what they can do for you or because there is something you can gain from their friendship?
I truly believe that selfishness is one of the biggest obstacles in loving like Christ. Our flesh always thinks of self first.
On many occasions, I have had to examine my own heart. I have to check my motives on everything I am doing. We can be doing many good things and think we are loving people but if our motive for doing these things has anything to do with what we can gain, whether it be attention, friends, titles, or money than we are being selfish.
According to Philippians 2:3-4, selfishness is an attitude and has everything to do with our motives. Why we do the things we do.
I challenge you today to truly bring your heart to the Lord and ask Him to examine it. Let Him shine His light in there and allow Him to show you any areas where your motives may be selfish. When you become friends with someone, check your heart and ask why you want to be friends with this person. When you do something nice for someone, check your heart as to why you are doing it. God is faithful to show us these things and to change our hearts to align with His.
I want to love people well, like Jesus did. He did things for others because He loved them and wanted to see them saved so they would be with them. He obeyed His Father out of love and reverence for Him, not for anything He could get. Let’s love like Jesus today!!
Heavenly Father, I thank You that we can go to You with ourselves. I thank You that when we surrender our hearts to You, that you lovingly shine Your light on us and expose any darkness that is there. I pray that as You expose those places in our hearts where we may have selfishness and selfish motives, that You would change that in us. We love You and desire to love like You! In Jesus Name! Amen!
